The vineyard on the outskirts of Burkittsville has stories to tell.

“We’ve found musket balls here before, but never an arrowhead,” Rob Deford says as I examine the quartz relic his son Phineas has discovered in the vineyard on a sunny September morning. Its tip and edges only slightly dulled by a sojourn in the soil, the arrowhead speaks of centuries of history along the Appalachian Mountains, long before modern man decided this would be a good place to plant grapes.

Volvo Group in Hagerstown, MD shares $19M for ‘SuperTruck’ Research & Development

Under a recently awarded SuperTruck contract with the U.S. Department of Energy, Volvo Technology of America, Inc. is scheduled to receive $19M in federal funding.  This will be used by the Volvo Group’s North American truck-related operations to improve the freight-moving efficiency of heavy-duty trucks while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Volvo Group makes Volvo and Mack trucks in the U.S.

Jim and Bonnie Weddle weren't sure they'd make it to their own celebration.

Without dedicated employees taking on an important project on Saturday, they'd have had to stay home and work, they said.

The Weddles, who run Creek Bound Farms on Poffenberger Road south of Funkstown, received this year's Farm of the Year award at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center.
