Hagerstown, Md. (April XX, 2014) – The Washington County Office of Agricultural Business Development, is pleased to invite artisan food, drink and craft lovers to visit the South Mountain Spring Festival and trail April 30, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and  May 1, 12 – 4p.m. Throughout the weekend, local businesses will feature tours, refreshments and activities for the entire family in the Boonsboro, Rohrersville, Knoxville, Jefferson, Middletown, Brownsville and Burkittsville and Gathland State Park areas.

Within a 10-mile drive, visitors will find the following businesses and one-of-a-kind experiences:

  • Caprikorn Farms Artisan Goat Cheese, 20312 Townsend Road, Gapland, Md.

Caprikorn Farms raises award winning Saanen dairy goats. Stop by to see the new kids capering and ready to play with your kids while you sample artisan goat cheeses.

  • Van Gilder Pottery, 20834 Townsend Road, Gapland, Md.

Van Gilder Pottery is a working pottery and contemporary craft gallery in a restored barn atop South Mountain. The shop will have a gallery chock full of hand-thrown pots, jewelry woodwork and glass. 

  • Penguin Forge, 1143 Valley Road, Knoxville, MD

Blacksmith David Dufficy transforms plain bars of iron into pieces of functional beauty using a traditional coal forge and anvil. His pieces take inspiration from the traditional scrollwork of the past and the organic forms of nature: leaves, flowers, birds and animals. Come experience why blacksmithing is truly a magical craft.

  • Distillery Lane Ciderworks, 5533 Gapland Road, Jefferson, Md.

Handcrafted ciders are naturally tart, aromatic and never sweet.  With over 3000 trees nestled at the base of South Mountain, the blooming apple trees will rival the cherry blossoms in DC (without the traffic or crowds) and tastings, beekeeping demos and a scavenger hunt for the kids are available.

  • Orchard Cellar Winery, 8546 Pete Wiles Road, Middletown, Md.

We are Maryland’s premier meadery and winery specializing in complex honey wines a well as unique red and white varietals.  Take a tour of Orchid Cellar Winery and blind-taste their new mead.

  • Big Cork Vineyards, 4236 Main Street, Rohrersville, Md.

In production for five years, Big Cork is the second largest vineyard in Washington County.  They also produce black raspberries, pumpkins, vegetables, mixed timothy and orchard grass and hay. For the first time, Big Cork Vineyards will be part of the Festival – opening their state of the art tasting room for your enjoyment.
