Aircraft engines donated to Hagerstown campus of aeronautics school

July 29, 2012

Build A Plane recently announced a donation of two general-aviation aircraft engines to the Hagerstown campus of the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics educational program.

The donation of the engines, salvaged from damaged aircraft, was facilitated by Avemco Insurance Co., headquartered in Frederick, Md.

“This is the first stand-alone engine donation that Build A Plane has facilitated, and we’re excited that the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics will be able to put the engines to immediate use,” Katrina Bradshaw, executive director of Build A Plane, said in a news release. “Usually our engines are already part of an aircraft, but these, while not flyable, will be great for educating ... students.”

Build A Plane has placed more than 200 real airplanes in middle and high schools, and with youth organizations across the United States. Build A Plane solicits aircraft donations and then regifts those projects to schools.

Avemco facilitates several aircraft salvage donations to Build A Plane each year, and this was the first time engines became available for donation.

“We’re pleased that the engines will be used for such a terrific program. And, with the school right over the mountain from our home office, we’ll be able to keep track of the projects and the student progress with the engines,” Jonathan “JJ” Greenway, president of Avemco, said in the release.

“We’ve got 40 students in our program near the airport, and these engines will be used right away as teaching tools,” Thomas O’Keefe, director of the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics in Hagerstown, said in the release. “We’ll tear them down and rebuild them most likely over and over again. It’s unusual to get U.S. production engines, and these will make an excellent addition to our practical training courses.”

The engines have been stored and prepared for donation by Tracey Potter and his team at Hagerstown Aircraft Services at Hagerstown Regional Airport.
