The first annual Maryland International Film Festival-Hagerstown has selected 51 films from 19 different countries to screen at the 2011 film festival. Director Tracie Donahue said, “The quality of these films is remarkable for a first year festival. We received submissions from some of the best independent filmmakers whose films have screened in the largest festivals around the globe including Cannes, Sundance, Tribeca, Silver Docs and Hot Docs. The Maryland audiences are in for a real treat!”
The Maryland International Film Festival Hagerstown (MDIFF) is scheduled to run October 13-16, 2011. Donahue said, “There are hundreds of film festivals around the world. We are unique because not only are we giving filmmakers a place to screen their films, additionally we want to give back to organizations around the globe with proceeds from the festival.”
Opening night of the festival will be launched at the historic Maryland Theater. MDIFF attending celebrities include Director Joe Carnahan (A Team), Matthew Michael Carnahan (World War Z, Lions for Lambs), Tom Sizemore (tentative) (Saving Private Ryan), Robin Givens (Boomerang), Hector Jimenez (Nacho Libre), Kevin Farley (Tommy Boy), and Olga Segura (White Knight). The opening night red carpet festivities will be composed of several attending celebrities along with directors whose films were chosen to participate in the four-day event. A portion of ticket sales on opening night will be given to the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts.
MDIFF is screening films in several categories including: Feature, Documentary, Student, Short and Animation. Sponsorships are being accepted through the end of August. The MDIFF mission is to be a platform for independent filmmakers to engage audiences, collaborate with other filmmakers and educate the community with the celebration of film.
