Location of the infamous Antietam Battlefield
Home to 700 residents, Sharpsburg is a historic residential community that is deeply tied to its historical roots. Sharpsburg hosts over 35,000 people during the annual 4th of July celebration at Antietam National Battlefield where the Maryland Symphony Orchestra holds its Annual Salute to Independence playing classical music before the featured fireworks.
There are many historic places in the United States, but few hold the distinction of Sharpsburg, and the adjacent Antietam Battlefield. It was at this location where thousands died in the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. This peaceful family town was the place where the Civil War exploded, leaving 23,000 dead and wounded. More men were killed or wounded at Antietam than on any other single day of the Civil War.
